What Did You Think of the Super Bowl 2010 Commercials?

There were several good ones, I was a little disappointed -- not as many great ones as the last few years.

I LOVED the Punxsatawny Polamalu (ok, a little partial since he's one of my favorite players on my favorite team), the Snickers - Betty White one and the re-do of the HORSE game with Le Bron.

Way too much of the guys in baggy drawers -- please put some pants on!

International Womens Professional Football League

Hey everyone,

My daughter Zarah has been picked to play professional football for the Seattle Majestics (www.theseattlemajectics.com). In the IWPFL. Their first game is April 3rd against the California Quake in Downy, CA. This is an awesome sport and give those hard hitting ladies a way to play their favorite sport after highschool. Give the website a look and help support this awesome endeavor. This is real hard hitting, tackle football. They also play teams from San Diego, Sacramento, Portland Oregon, Corvalis Oregon and Tucson Arizona. There are team all over the United States and the world.

Dragon*Con 2010 RSVP Thread

Taking a page from the sadock handbook... who's planning on Dragon*Con 2010?

As always, it's Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3-6 in Hotlanta!

Pricing for the Memberships (aka 1-year regsitration) to Dragon*Con 2010 is as follows:

$70 until 02/15/2010
$80 until 05/14/2010
$90 until 07/15/2010
$100 thereafter

So, if you buy early, you can spend that $30 on "The Starter," right? Deadline approaching for the $70 memberships.

The dragoncon.org website has lots of guests listed for 2010 already. I don't see the FDO on there yet, but I am hopeful he and A will see fit to make it a stop on the tour again this year. (oh please, oh please!) I still can't figure out why Howard Hesseman (Dr. Johnny Fever on WKRP in Cincinnati) is coming -- can someone enlighten me?

I'd love to meet some fellow junkies, who's coming this year?

Scientists in Melbourne, Australia, used a ventilator and pump to keep the animal lungs alive and "breathing" while human blood flowed in them.

Experts estimated the work could lead to the first animal-human transplants within five years.

Dr Glenn Westall, who helped conduct the experiment, said: “The blood went into the lungs without oxygen and came out with oxygen, which is the exact function of the lungs.

"It showed that these lungs were working perfectly well and doing as we were expecting them to do.

“This is a significant advance compared to experiments that have been performed over the past 20 years."

The breakthrough came after scientists were able to remove a section of pig DNA, which had made the pig organs incompatible with human blood.

Previous attempts to combine unmodified pig lungs and human blood ended abruptly two years ago when blood clots began forming almost immediately, causing the organs to become so blocked no blood could pass through.

Human DNA is now added to the pigs as they are reared to reduce clotting and the number of lungs which are rejected.

The full results of the research are due to be announced in Vancouver in August.

The issue has prompted an ethical debate about the use of animals for human transplants.

Medical ethicist Professor Nicholas Tonti-Filippini said: “It is basically a human-pig, a hybrid, or whatever you want to call it.

I forgot to even watch any of the Pro Bowl coverage. Usually some of that is pretty fun, the contests before and all.

Trying to get excited about the SB but no one I know cares At All! I guess I'll cheer for the Saints. Or maybe Payton Manning's team... see, I can't decide because frankly it just doesn't matter this year.

Krakens Quarterback found dead in apartment, authorities suspect foul play.

Quentin Barnes, starting quarterback for the Ionath Krakens, was found dead in his apartment in Ionath City today. Officials are conducting an investigation and have indicated that a preliminary toxicology report suggests foul play was involved. Krakens team owner Gredok the Splithead held a brief press conference, in which he stated “We are all stunned at the untimely death of such a talented football player. Krakens fans can rest assured that I and my organization will do everything within our power to assist in the investigation and bring the responsible party to justice. Everything!”

We at the Ionath Gazette will, of course, deliver the latest information regarding this ongoing investigation to our readers as it is released.

ONE

Gredok the Splithead tossed the Ionath Gazette messageboard onto the large ornate desk in his office at Ionath Stadium. It had been a busy morning, and looked to be an even busier afternoon.

“What are we going to do without Barnes?!” exclaimed Hokor the Hookchest, his large eye swirling with pinks and reds. He was pacing rapidly in front of Gredok’s desk, clearly upset beyond rational thought. “Without him, we don’t stand a chance at winning the Championship next season! Where are we going to find another quarterback with his skill by then?!”

Gredok shot Hokor a baleful glance that served to snap the Kraken’s head coach out of his hysteria. Gredok glared at him a moment longer and said “No, we won’t, but it does not matter.”

Hokor, surprised and confused by the response, smoothed his antennae back with one pedipalp. Wisps of confused purple now joined the pinks and reds in Hokor’s eye.

“Apologies Shamakath, but I’m not sure I understand.”

“Of course you don’t, old friend” Gredok replied. “And that is why I get to sit behind the big desk. Barnes served his purpose, he got the team into Tier 1. Anything beyond that was merely added-value. While we have lost his considerable talent, the upshot is that no one else can have him either. Try to see the positive side of this… development.”

“The positive side, yes of course Shamakath.” Hokor had stopped pacing as Gredok motioned for him to take a seat in front of the desk. “Does this mean that we… I mean you, will not be launching an independent investigation?”

Gredok leaned forward and put his fingers on the desktop. “Absolutely not. I was hoping to get many profitable seasons out of Barnes’ talent and that advantage has been taken from me. Nobody takes from me. I meant what I said in that press conference. I will find out who did this and they will pay dearly!” Gredok’s eye briefly went from clear to jet black, then back to clear.

“In the meantime Coach Hokor, you should begin looking for a replacement to back up Don Pine. He has a few good years left and he’s won two Tier 1 Championships. His waning skills should be enough to keep us in Tier 1 next season, and protecting my trade route immunity means more to me right now than winning the title.”

“Do you really trust Pine after his betrayal?”

“Not in the slightest, but he knows that if I even suspect he is allowing outside entities to impact his performance, I will have him thrown out the Touchback’s shuttle bay airlock while we’re in Punchspace.”

Hokor shivered a bit at the threat and his eye turned solid pink in sympathetic fear of the prospect. There are many horrible ways in the universe to die, but being tossed out an airlock while in Punchspace was particularly brutal if the scientists were accurate about the effects on organic material.

“Is Messal still being questioned by the police?” Gredok asked, leaning back in his chair once again.

Hokor regained his composure once again. “Yes Shamakath. He has been down there for a few hours, but I expect they will be done with him soon.”

The phone on Gredok’s desk began to chime with the tone that indicated an incoming call on his personal, secured line. “Excellent. Send him to me as soon as he returns. Now if you’ll excuse me Coach, I must take this call.”

“Of course, Shamakath” Hokor replied as he stood. He swept his antennae back once more, bowed, then left the office quickly.

As soon as the office door closed, Gredok hit the button to open the line on the phone. “Tell me what you’ve found out.”

TWO

Messal the Efficient was tired. Tired and angry at the death – no, murder – of Quentin Barnes. He knew of Quentin’s Purist Nation background, new that he had been raised in a society that hated, well, pretty much everyone else in the universe. But he also watched Quentin rise above his upbringing, and he respected him for that. Now was not the time for sentiment though. Gredok wanted to see him, to find out what he had said to the police. He had come straight from the police station to the Krakens Stadium office annex.

The Ionath City police… what a joke. Messal knew that Gredok had at least half of the ICP officers and patrolmen on his payroll, but apparently they wanted to at least pretend to be actually investigating this crime. They had asked him a dozen times in a dozen different ways to recount the details of his last encounter with Quentin Barnes. It was probably just a show for the media, which was all over this case like Pashi Bugs on a Quisling. Each time he recited the exact same story. And why shouldn’t he? It was the truth, after all. He escorted Quentin home at the behest of Gredok, helped carry a load of birthday gifts up to his apartment, then left. The only detail of the evening that troubled him was the fact that Gredok had assigned him the task of ensuring that Barnes made it home safely, and hadn’t he done that? Could Gredok hold him responsible for what happened to Barnes after he left? He pondered this for a moment, then he pressed the announcement button outside Gredok’s office.

Three

“Messal the Efficient at your door” chimed the building AI.

“Enter” Gredok replied.

The office door slid open and Messal the Efficient stepped in. Gredok’s office was rather large and ornate by Quyth standards, but Messal crossed the ten meters from the threshold to Gredoks desk with his usual alacrity, then swept a pedipalp across his short antennae.

“You wanted to see me Shamakath?” Messal said.

“Sit” Gredok replied, gesturing to one of the chairs in front of his desk.

Messal chose to sit in the human chair rather than the one designed for Quyth leaders, but only because it accommodated his larger size better.

“I need you to tell me exactly what you told the police” Gredok said.

Messal recited the exact same story he’d told the police, line for line.

“You’re sure you are not leaving anything out, perhaps some detail that you failed to remember during your interrogation?” Gredok asked.

“No Shamakath, it is exactly as I told the investigating officer.” Messal’s small eye gave no indication of betrayal, though it was tinged with the colors of nervousness.

“Well clearly there is something on your mind. Out with it, Messal. I don’t have time for games today” Gredok said with just the barest hint of frustration in his voice.

Messal stood, swept his antennae back again, and bowed respectfully. “You tasked me with getting Mr. Barnes back to his apartment safely Shamakath, and I failed. I am prepared to accept whatever punishment you have in mind”

Gredok tapped the fingers of his right pedipalp rhythmically on the desktop a few times before responding. “No Messal, you did not fail. Barnes was alive and well when you left him, and based on what I have learned from my source in the Investigation Division, you had no reason to suspect that he would not remain that way. I do not hold you responsible for his death.”

Messal bowed again. “Yes, Sir” he replied.

Gredok stared at him for a few moments more, considering his next move. “You may go, Messal” he said, waving a pedipalp dismissively.

“Yes, Sir” Messal replied once more. He bowed again, but paused before leaving. “Shamakath, if I may be so bold…”

Gredok gestured for him to continue.

“Mr. Barnes was… nice to me. He appreciated my service. It was the last thing he said to me before I left. Is there is any way in which I can assist with your plan to deal with his murder?”

“I will let you know if I have need of your… skills. Just continue to be available on a moment’s notice” Gredok replied.

Is it possible to have the Active Forum Topics include Scott's Blog of F**K and the Front Page?

At present, any time someone makes a new comment to a topic within the Forum proper, that topic is bounced to the top of the Active Forum Topics section of the site. This is the box in the right margin, recently expanded from 10 to 15 topics at Belladonna's request. I'm wondering if it's possible to include comments made to discussions on the Front Page (eg new episodes, D0M year in review, etc.) and Scott's Blog of F**K.

I know I only monitor the Active Forum Topics as a general rule. If I've made a comment in a Front Page or Blog of F**K post (eg Purist Nation Basketball League?) then I will go back and check to monitor that occasionally. But I don't check on it very often. It's just not convenient for me. I suspect I'm not alone in this behavior, but I could be wrong.

Tomorrow is Feb. 1st- When is the podcast coming out?

Random users getting their pictures deleted

I have noticed several users pictures disappear over the past week. The three I noticed were scottsigler (FD∅™), I AM--- (MC), & deathspiral (MC). Scott has since replaced his. I AM & deathspiral's are still missing. I don't know if this is a gremlin in Drupal or what. Figured I should bring it to your attention since it is no longer an isolated incident.

If you are a user who has had their picture deleted (and you didn't do it), please post a comment here with any details you can provide. Thanks!

Is The failed pimp taking over my brain?

I think The dark overlord is taking over my brain. I have been listening to the Rookie for about a week now. I am on part 22 and i cannot stop listening. Although the other night i actualy had a dream that i was on the team. I think Scott Sigler's books are trying to take over my brain. I don't know if this is the way Scott Sigler is attempting to take over the world by controling peoples brain but i cannot stop thinking about his stories. Keep up the great work!

1) What is the beef between the LoP and PU? Is it ideological or territorial? I get the Purist Nation...they are ideologues of the highest order. My Guess is that LoP is Technocratic...PU is more akin to EU/USA?
2) Happy to hear that Earthcore ties into the arch storyline of Siglerverse...the Tank was the most brutal thing I have ever read/listened too. I take it these evil human eating wasps will be the nemisis of the PUV Keeling crew?
3) How do the Triangles from Infected/Contagious tie in? Do they? is this a completely alternate Siglerverse?
4) The layout of the current universal-political-landscape in the crypt is awesome...but it bums me out that all of humanity will eventually be subjugated by smart-ass bat hummingbird type creatures...anyone else feel this?

5) How would Bret Favre fare in the GLF?

Listening to Nocturnal and I am not offended and I aint no pussy. the BOOK KICKS ASS and I love it. However, after listening to Earthcore, the infected series, and now this, I have a few complaints, and none relate even remotely to the quality of the voices, which I find to be good. (having listeneed to over 90 books in the last 26 months, I gotta say I am kinda a snobbish expert....) With all the monster descriptions it brings back pleasant memories of shopping at the safeway on Market and eating a burger at Burgermeister!

First<

NOONE who is a native in san francisco ever uses the following terms or makes the following maneuvers:

"bust my balls"

fist pumping/butting or whatever that stupid fist hitting thing from evil New Jersey is.

When I moved to the east coast 5 yrs ago I didn't even understand these two things and have NEVER heard or seen them in San Fran. In fact, were I to even use the term or the fist abomination with my friends I would get my ass kicked.

However, it is true that the native san fracniscan (actually from the peninsula) would look at Al Gore as a whore to the greenies.

Also, it is not pronounced "Porrrrtrero" it is pronounced "Potrero"

It is 3rd street he describes in the podcast NOT 3rd Ave = 3rd Ave is in the Sunset and he was describing an area down south of the park on the bay.

Finally, they are not freakin CLIPS dude, they are MAGAZINES! As a native californian gun nut I should know.

Other than that, I love it and when is the movie coming out?

Oh yeah, why no chicken scissiors in the caves? it would be nice...
