closing menu's on the right side

Dear Pulsar,

would it at all be possible to make me able to close the little boxes on the right (the one labeled "watch the infected trailer" and similar boxes) just like on the left side.

You can have them expanded by default for all the new junkies and one-time visitors but, us registered junkies have seen the Infected trailer and we have the free audiobooks

Not that I don't appreciate your work, but I would like to be able to close these boxes 'cause I find the a bit distracting.

Hopefully I made my request clear and hopefully you'll give me a response.

I thank you in advance for the energy you put in this (even the energy you put in this just for reading it).

Hey!

Why do I have to deal with the responsibility of deciding whether to keep them open or closed. Damn it, I want it back the old way! (Just kidding, Pulsar!)

Done

OK, it took a "while". You should be able to close any side-block now. I've reworked the whole collapse-system. Meanwhile the states are remembered on block-id basis (not based on the sequential number of visible blocks anymore). New visitors will get all boxes in the expanded state.

Cheers!
Paul.

Vielen Dank Herr Pulsar

Hey, I spent a while just opening and closing them... fun.

Thank you, Tech God Pulsar. At times they were in the way of something, but I just enjoy opening and closing, opening and closing.......

no hard feelings, but I've got to counter your argument. For the sake of this discussion

everything is possible

just tell me how you would like it to behave and i'll try to make it possible. Not sure what about "new" boxes. Right now the state is remembered until you close the browser (non persistent cookies).

Why is that funny?

JP's picture
"Non persistent cookies." That just strikes me as funny. Or maybe low-calorie.

 I'm willing to bet that

ext237's picture

I'm willing to bet that the quality of the postings on the forums would drastically improve if people's attention wasn't constantly redirected everly 0.5 seconds to the flashing images on the right side of the screen.

It took me 45 minutes to type this because of the flashing! Ok, not really that long.

Watch out

Fine by me

Pjotr NL's picture

I am willing to close them every time I visit. (keeping those non persistent cookies. Of course the FDO has the final say. It's his site and if he wants new boxes opened it's fine by me, but I just thought I'd point it out. I don't know what the other junkies think about it.

But anything you decide is fine with me.

i really dont mind

but it would be nice to be able to minimize them...

Very interesting ...

scottsigler's picture

So we can have everything collapsed if you're a registered user, but locked open if you're a visitor or a newbie? (and by "Newbie," I mean "fresh meat").

So if I have this correct, for registered users, the side bars will be open initially, but if a user chooses to close them the site remembers that state?

Also, what happens if I add new sidebar items, or change one, so I want to make sure everyone sees it?

You're the FDO

The real issue is ...

ext237's picture

By far, the real issue is the flashing images.  They are really really distracting.  If the pictures of the books would "ease" or "fade" from one image to another, that would be different.

But that flashing makes me want to have a headache.  Hard to read/consume forum content when my eyes and brain reroute focus to the flashing books.

Flashing is out man, thats Web'98 kinda stuff.

Ask the FDO

pulsar's picture

our FDO has decided to make them non-collapseable. I'll point him to this thread though.

The idea to let registered users collapse any block they want while anonymous users have to see the pretty adverts we have on this site is  not that stupid and doable. Let's see what the FDO decides, I'm here to obey :)

Cheers!
Paul.

hhhmmm...

I see what you mean...  I can work around it, but can understand why some might want to be able to minimize them...   Your call.
