well you asked for it....

Brombi's picture

Hi Scott, since you asked for comments about the story, here a question for ya. It's a pretty minour thingy anyway, but since you strive for perfection.......

In the Lancers war-room switchback scene, where Frank, his Grandpa and Dad are talking about good 'ol times, you mentioned  the dads age.  Isn't  25 years a bit young, to  be  the  father  of a  7ish year old  boy.

I know, it's possible, but he would have been damn young for fatherhood, even for an italian gangster.

Benevolent FDO

JP's picture

Wow, I just realized how this episode proves the benevolence of our FDO. I seem to recall the deal was if you signed up before a certain date and were labeled an Original Junkie, then you were eligible to be included in one of the FDO's works of fiction and possibly receive the high honor of being clobbered.  Now he lets non-OJs into the mix and even killed a few.

See how nice our FDO really is!  Watch out Hutchinsss; you're not the only nice guy in town...

so.

Sigler speaks Russian.

I was really touched by the "poshol na khui" in #27 I smiled with tears in my eyes, my girlfriend suspects I listen to some sentimental crap. Why are you doing this to me?
And great job by Bill translating those phrases and the "blue" reference.
But there are two TINY problems with cases / stylistscs. (open source novel, right?)
"Menya zhdoot seychas v barye."

 would sound better as:

 "Menya zhdoot v barye."

you really don't need "seychas" ("right now") there -- in Russian we omit a lot. and shorter phrasing makes Sasha sound tougher :)

"Znachit: ili ty otvetish' na vsyekh voprosov nachal'nika"
should be:
"Znachit: ili ty otvetish' na vsye voprosy nachal'nika"

(that's just different case or whaterver)

(and to Bill: why "zhdoot" but "khui"? if you'd spelled it "khooi" Scott would have had less of an American accent saying it and sounded tougher as well. he fucking needs it when reading Russian :-p)

Got me!

Artm --

Yeah, you're right about the case of "all the chief's questions." Hopefully you caught it in time for the Nocturnal hardcover version!

As for the transliteration, I normally go with "u" for Cyrillic y (as in khui), but in the case of zhdoot vs. zhdut I felt an English native speaker would be almost irresistibly tempted to pronounce zhdut as if it rhymed with the English word "shut." Most English speakers would, however, tend to pronounce khui pretty close to correctly, whether they were sitting on one or not.

In cases like this I'm always reminded of the wise words of the Mystery Science Theater theme song: "If you're wondering how he eats and breathes, and other science facts, repeat to yourself 'It's just a show, I should really just relax!'" :)

Great episode

JZ's picture

I just luuuved the reference to Jack Wakes Up; but could you cut back on the Barbara Cartland'ish feely-feely between Robin and the Ninja - or, are you just '...in a place in your life, where, like aahm, you sort'a just need to talk 'bout feelings'n'stuff, man...' ?

Btw - don't you *dare* snuff Pookie Chang - he so needs to see this through to the end.

What's Sasha saying?

There's some untranslated Russian in Episode #27. Since I'm the one who came up with it, I thought I'd share Scott's original English version of the dialogue with you, (in the brackets below).
Scott does a nice job with that Russian accent, BTW.

“Gennady, I’ll keep this simple,” Amy said. “I want Dmitri, and you’re going to give him to me.”

"Ne govoryu po-angliiski,” Gennady said.
[I don't speak English]

"What did he say?"

“He says he doesn’t speak English,” Sasha said.

“Get him talking,” Zou said. “I don’t care how.”

Sasha nodded, then turned back to face Gennady. “Menya zhdoot seychas v barye. Znachit: ili ty otvetish' na vsyekh voprosov nachal'nika, ili ya perevedu tebya tak kak-budto ty soznayoshsya vo vsyom.”
[I should be in a bar right now (literally: They're waiting for me in a bar right now), so either you answer all the chief's questions, or I'll mistranslate you and say you're confessing to everything.]

"Poshyol na khui,” Gennady said.
[Go fuck yourself (literally: Go [sit] on a cock)]

Thanks for the kind words. Also for asking about future projects. On that score, I'm happy to say: yes, Dualism, the sequel to Singularity, is just going through final edits right now.

Meanwhile, I'm seriously considering a non-fiction podcast, tentatively titled "Doctor Jack's Soapbox Seminars" -- about the science behind Singularity. Any interest in such a beast out there?

JP's picture

Bill, would this be your podcast, or Dr. Jack Adler's?  Or both...?  Either way, it would be fun!

Me or Doctor Jack?

billdesmedt's picture

JP --

I'm still undecided as to how to present Doctor Jack's Soapbox Seminars. The text itself is a collaborative exercise between me and Jack's real-life counterpart. I'd be doing the reading regardless, but I'm not sure whether to do it in my own voice, or in the faux-Texan accent I gave Jack Adler in the Singularity podcast. What do you guys think?

Tough question

JP's picture

I recently downloaded Singularity and should start listening to it this week--finishing up two other works first. I don't feel qualified to answer until I give the book a listen. If time permits, I'll let you know my opinion (for what it's worth) within a week.

By all means give a listen and then weigh in. Especially listen to that Texan accent I tried to approximate, and see if that's what you'd want to be hearing pretty much exclusively for podcast after podcast. Smile

Alright. Here are my thoughts...

JP's picture
Bill, I'm now 12 chapters into the book and have heard enough of Dr. Jack to comment. The accent works. I'm not sure what a Texan might say, but regardless, it doesn't distract or sound like you're laboring through it. So, I think what probably matters is what you intend to communicate through the soapbox. You may be able to take a little more license if you do this as Jack, since he's a fictional character. If you want to stretch the limits of conventional thought, that might be the way to go. Otherwise, I think the easiest thing to do to communicate is just use your own voice. Either would work for me! Follow-up to this note coming soon in a PM.

Loving the book and already looking forward to the next one!

JP --

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying SINGULARITY.

And, as to the upcoming DOCTOR JACK'S SOAPBOX SEMINARS podcast, talking in my own voice would for sure be easier. OTOH, they're sort of written in Jack Adler's voice. I'm going to keep mulling this one, but I've got a plan: the ultimate litmus test will be to record an episode and then run it past a real Texan of my acquaintance.Smile

Well

Pjotr NL's picture

saying it in your own voice would be the easiest on your vocal cords. but since it is DOCTOR JACK's soapbox seminars I guess it would be only fitting if you should present it in Jack Adler's voice.

Thanks for the Feedback

billdesmedt's picture

Pjotr,

Thanks for your advice. Thanks to all the feedback I've gotten, I've pretty much decided to use Jack's voice rather than my own, but I want to record a sample and run it past a friend and native Texan first.

The Science!

billdesmedt's picture

Hey, Panelmate!

Happy to puzzle through the science with you, if that might help. Singularity's actually been vetted by some big guns in the world of black hole physics: CalTech's Kip Thorne, Hebrew U's Jacob Bekenstein, MIT's Scott Hughes, so I'm pretty confident the science is accurate. How well I explained it, though, is up to the reader.

Best,

Semi-spoiler, don't read if you haven't heard/read Singularity

treed's picture

-it isn't your science, it's the concept of time travel. it has been a LONG time since i took my astronomy/cosmology classes (mumoo00, cosmology is NOT cosmotology, again, ask wallerdad). i know time gets all fritz around black holes/singularities. but to actually travel through time?? i like how you delt with it. if time travel IS possible, then the timeline cannot be changed, because going back in time just means you are a part of history, not changing it, so you where destend to travel back in time in the first place. hence history isnt changed, nothing is different in the historical perspective. did i mention i hate time paradoxes?? they make for fun scifi stories and TV programs, but in the real world... let's just say that's a different story...

how you explained it and delt with it was fabulous. Got some old cogs in this old brain spinning again.

By the by, i am a math/science teacher, undegrad in is geology, masters is in math, so i enjoy the science, when it is done right. like i said, you did an excellent job with your science, not to mention your story telling. i will be wanting on your next book, i ALMOST bought your book in the stores way back when it first came out, now i wish i had, wife tells me i should listen more to my instincts, being a logic based person, i have troubles with that, oh well... life, she throws us curves and laughs when we fall down.

More on Singularity Science and Semi-Spoilers

billdesmedt's picture

Hey, treed --

Thanks for the kind words about Singularity (still available on Amazon -- wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

And, yeah, time travel can be a bear. But even the Grandmother Paradox might not be as irredeemable as you'd think. Oxford philosopher Michael Lockwood sketches out a scenario in which the parricidal time-traveller returns, not to his/her own past, but to an almost indistinguishable parallel past, one in which granny dies and the time-traveller is never born. But to swallow that gnat, you first have to eat the elephant of the many-worlds interpretation of Everett's no-collapse quantum mechanics. I recommend starting with the trunk first.

Still, I find even the above more congenial than Einstein's statement that "for us devout physicists, the distinction between past, present and future has no significance beyond that of an illusion, albeit a tenacious one" (condolence letter to the family of Michele Besso, 1955).

Thank goodness Dualism will not be wrestling with such knotty problems. All it's about is artificial intelligence, collective consciousness, and life after death!Smile

OK you two...

Panelmate? OK you two, knock off that cutsie stuff... Seriously, if it doesn't get too technical, start a thread somewhere and let me know where to go. I'd love to be in on the chatter/explanations.

Two response...

Gmork's picture

1) Re: Science Thread...JP, I don't think it needs to be anything more than a "Science Thread" in the Miscellaneous section of the Forum.   Just direct people from here to the new thread.

2) treed...Singularity ( in hardcover ) is still available on amazon at the following link (so no regrets necessaryLaughing):

 http://www.amazon.com/Singularity-Bill-DeSmedt/dp/0974573442/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212378384&sr=8-1

Science Thread

JP's picture
Yeah, I'll probably set one up soon. I was thinking bigger though--a "Science Behind Sigler's Fiction" forum, with various topics underneath for the variety of science (and technical) stuff in his various books. Also under there could be an "Other Science" topic for discussions that don't track directly to science/technology in Sig's books, but stuff that still interests the junkies. As a junkie, I can't set up a forum though (tried), so I've punted a note to the FDO to see what he thinks. If he's not keen on the idea, you can count on a thread appearing soon.

- Prospice tibi--ut Gallia, to quoque in tres partes dividaris.

Yup, sounds cool!

That could be interesting (to have a dedicated science forum)...either way, I'd be interested in it as well.

Hands down, one of my favs...

Gmork's picture

I hear ya...I listened to Singularity after 7th Son, Ancestor and EarthCore.  I ended up loving it...probably because I didn't anticipate the ending at all.  Listening to Singularity got me interested in learning more about Physics (ended up buying every Stephen Hawkings book on the market!).

Any way, if you do get a copy (I have two!!) they are quality hardcovers.  There's even glossy words written in cyrillic on the dust jacket that are pretty hard to see on the Amazon picture but look quite lovely on the matte jacket.

High Praise, Indeed!
