That was a couple of nice surprises. I had checked the site earlier in the day, so I wasn't expecting a new Nocturnal when I updated my podcasts last night. Great episode, wish it was longer, but I don't think an hour episode would be long enough for me. Can't believe there are only 2 more episodes. I had read about Contagious and The Crypt on the site, but I hadn't made any comment about them. Excellent news! I think I'm looking forward to The Crypt a little more though because I love The Rookie universe and those teasers got me hooked. Nocturnal possibly being the third book with Crown totally surprised me though. I had assumed all the Crown books were in the Infected series for some reason. If you do go with Nocturnal does that mean you could continue with your April Fools book release since you've already got a draft of it done? That may be a little close to Contagious and be three books in a year, but I would love to have a book version of Nocturnal, my new favorite, and figured it would be several years before that happened.
OT, but are Earthcore or Ancestor going to get another print release or are they in some kind of rights limbo? I missed those the first time around and it would be nice to pick them up.
And Scott it is totally your fault that you get the complaints that you do about the late episodes, etc. If you don't want people to complain, don't put out such good stories. In that vien, where are The Starter and Mt. Fitzroy? What are you some kind of slacker that can only publish 2 hardcovers and podcast a couple free stories in a year? Seriously, take a bit of vacation after you're done with Nocturnal, you've had a big year and deserve it.
A lot of questions ...
1. The third book with Crown has not yet been decided. It's a player to be named later type of deal. I won't want to write PANDEMIC, the third book in the INFECTED series, for quite some time.
2. If they went with NOCTURNAL, then yes, it's possible it could be out for April. Unlikely, but possible.
3. EARTHCORE and ANCESTOR are going to get a release from Crown. 2009 or 2010. They will be rewritten. Call me a Speilberg, I just can't pass up a chance to make the final product better. Might be hardcover, we're not sure yet.
4. THE STARTER may be the next book I work on after NOCTURNAL and CONTAGIOUS are finished. THE CRYPT is a different kind of book, so I can do two at once.
5. MT. FITZROY needs to wait until the re-write of EARTHCORE, so don't expect that until 2010 or 2011. Sorry!

As long as you don't act like Speilberg and replace the knives with walkie talkies I look forward to having Rocktopi and Baby McButters in book form someday.
If you still aren't decided about The Starter being next, let me throw my vote (if this was a democracy and you weren't the FDO) that way. I remember being hesitant about The Rookie after Earthcore and Ancestor since I'm not a big sports guy, but it didn't take me the 4 episodes to get hooked. Nocturnal barely edges it out right now as my favorite and that may be because Nocturnal is still going on. When I start thinking about The Rookie and the universe that you laid out in the background though I lean back towards that. Also having The Starter and The Crypt at the same time would kick some serious ass.
I'm not too concerned about Mt. Fitzroy. I always figured it would be a ways off and that is why I still haven't listened to the opening you had done at some con. I know someday you'll continue the story about the retarded imbred aliens who like thier knives. I just realized that Rocktopi are space hillbillies and like real hillbillies I wouldn't want to be anywhere near them.

You might have already have mentioned this but is the schedule for the podcasted books 1. finish nocturnal. 2. finish draft of Contagious (can't wait) and send it to Crown. 3. Podcast Contagious? or 4. Podcast the Starter and Crypt? BTW what about Decendant? When is that going to be podcasted? Don't know how you do it but keep up the good work. But you do need to rest soon after Nocturnal or Contagious or whenever you fell you need it. Preferebly after you finish Nocturnal.

The schedule is as follows.
1. Finish CONTAGIOUS in the next four weeks
2. Finish NOCTURNAL podcast (by end of August, or I will kill a fuzzy bunny)
3. Podcast more stories from THE CRYPT throughout September to December
4. Begin "between books" podcast of INFECTED/CONTAGIOUS on Nov. 30
5. Begin CONTAGIOUS podcast on December 30
6. CONTAGIOUS hits store shelves on December 30
7. THE STARTER, not sure when I'll get rolling on it, I miss that storyline a lot
8. DESCENDANT has to wait for re-release of ANCESTOR, will be 2012 at the earliest

Oh, and Scott, man, take it a bit easy with the workohol. I don't want one of my favorite authors to burn himself out this early in his game. If you need to take a couple weeks off to sort out the chaos that is your life, go for it. Just stick the occasional five-minute update into the feed to let us know you haven't pod-fadded, and there won't be any hard feelings. Well, nothing other than the usual junkie hate, but you're used to that by now, right?

Scott, I couldn't believe how quickly you wrote Contagious. It makes my brain hurt just to think about writing so much in such a short time. So be careful, OK. I'd rather have to wait a few weeks between episodes than have your brain spontaneously combust.
(That's how Dickens died, you know. They came out with a cover story about a stroke or something but the real cause of death was spontaneous combustion of the brain.)
