My favorite magazine New Scientist is holding a contest where you can win the five books named by the Royal Society as the "best science books of 2009." As Metallica once said, "Win 'em all." How do you enter? By telling them Royal Society hoity-toity types what science books they missed from 2009.

Yes, this is the part where I drop so much STARTER shipping eye candy that those of you you haven't bought it get all riled up and your fingers take you involuntarily to the ordering page, so you, too, can git sum. If you want to see bigger images of these photos, head on over to Scott's Flickr Page. Day One went well. We packed up all the ROOKIE/STARTER 2-book sets in our fancy new shipping boxes. This batch heads to the post office today, creating some extra room in the Warehouse of Døøm. We got halfway through the foreign orders and will finish today. Again, finishing this smaller batch and getting it out the door creates room and allows us to focus on the biggest chunk -- US domestic orders. |

Any time we get a pop-culture figurehead talking about science instead of some woo-woo bullshit, you gotta give props.

PANDEMIC work begins soon ...

My work on PANDEMIC begins August 1. This is the final installment of a trilogy that began with INFECTED and continued with CONTAGIOUS. No teasers yet, but I thought y'all would like to see the actual definition of a "pandemic." Here's a good one from Wikipedia:
A pandemic (from Greek πᾶν pan "all" + δῆμος demos "people") is an epidemic of infectious disease that is spreading through human populations across a large region; for instance a continent, or even worldwide. A widespread endemic disease that is stable in terms of how many people are getting sick from it is not a pandemic. Further, flu pandemics exclude seasonal flu, unless the flu of the season is a pandemic. Throughout history there have been a number of pandemics, such as smallpox and tuberculosis. More recent pandemics include the HIV pandemic and the 2009 flu pandemic.
