Contest: Win some bitchin' books on science

New Scientst logoMy favorite magazine New Scientist is holding a contest where you can win the five books named by the Royal Society as the "best science books of 2009." As Metallica once said, "Win 'em all." How do you enter? By telling them Royal Society hoity-toity types what science books they missed from 2009.

So, if you knocked out any science related book published in 2009, you can enter this contest and win some bitchin' swag, including LIFE ASCENDING by Nick Lane.

STARTER shipping marathon: Day 1

ROOKIE & STARTER sets 1 The editiion of EEE-VILLL!A lot of boxes of THE STARTER

Yes, this is the part where I drop so much STARTER shipping eye candy that those of you you haven't bought it get all riled up and your fingers take you involuntarily to the ordering page, so you, too, can git sum.

If you want to see bigger images of these photos, head on over to Scott's Flickr Page.

Day One went well. We packed up all the ROOKIE/STARTER 2-book sets in our fancy new shipping boxes. This batch heads to the post office today, creating some extra room in the Warehouse of Døøm. We got halfway through the foreign orders and will finish today. Again, finishing this smaller batch and getting it out the door creates room and allows us to focus on the biggest chunk -- US domestic orders.

TOWAH of POWAH!

We have a winnah! The Back ANCESTOR contest is a success!

Junkies, as you know Dark Øverlord Media teamed up with BackMyBook.com to bring you the Back ANCESTOR contest.

Today we have a winnah! "fmslife," who goes by Jessica in the real world, is the new lucky owner of the sweet nook e-reader.  It's signed (defaced) by me, and I'll be recording a personalized mp3 message for Jessica, and DØM will be providing a bunch of short story PDFs, loaded up on her new nook.  The second and third place winners win personalized copies of ANCESTOR in hardcover.  All three may or may not receive assorted additional swag from the Office of Døøm. (Very likely to include Play Doh.)  read more »

Jimmy Fallon rocks science: Hubble Trouble

Jimmy Fallon just won major points with the FDO™. I saw this on Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy blog. Astronomy rap about the James Webb telescope replacing the amazing Hubble Telescope, as performed by "Milky J."

Any time we get a pop-culture figurehead talking about science instead of some woo-woo bullshit, you gotta give props.

Actual footage of "The Orbital" shot down by airborne laser

If you read CONTAGIOUS, perhaps you remember "The Orbital" getting the shit kicked out of it by some bitching airborne laser action. Yes, that's the technical term for it. Well the fine folks at the Air Force actually released the footage of this event. Dig on it!

ANCESTOR hits the UK on August 18

ANCESTOR UK cover for novel by Scott SiglerDear UK Junkies: ANCESTOR hits your book racks on August 18, 2010. If you haven't already pre-ordered the book from Amazon.co.uk, then mark your calendars and start spreading the word. It's got a fancy cover that's different from the US version. And no, just because the cover makes it look this way, ANCESTOR is not "slash" fiction.

PANDEMIC work begins soon ...

pandmic mapMy work on PANDEMIC begins August 1. This is the final installment of a trilogy that began with INFECTED and continued with CONTAGIOUS. No teasers yet, but I thought y'all would like to see the actual definition of a "pandemic." Here's a good one from Wikipedia:

A pandemic (from Greek πᾶν pan "all" + δῆμος demos "people") is an epidemic of infectious disease that is spreading through human populations across a large region; for instance a continent, or even worldwide. A widespread endemic disease that is stable in terms of how many people are getting sick from it is not a pandemic. Further, flu pandemics exclude seasonal flu, unless the flu of the season is a pandemic. Throughout history there have been a number of pandemics, such as smallpox and tuberculosis. More recent pandemics include the HIV pandemic and the 2009 flu pandemic.
