The Starter is a thriller / science fiction novel by American author Scott Sigler. It is the sequel to the novel The Rookie, released in 2009, and the second installment in a planned seven-book series.

The Starter follows the career of Galactic Football League quarterback Quentin Barnes, a football prodigy from the Purist Nation. Quentin has led the Ionath Krakens to a Tier 1 spot in the league. However, it took Quentin the whole season to overcome his racist views against his alien teammates. With the stakes being raised, will playing in the top echelon of football test the tenous team relationships Quentin has formed?
This story set in a lethal pro football league 700 years in the future combines the intense gridiron action of "Any Given Sunday" with the space opera style of "Star Wars" and the criminal underworld of "The Godfather."

As with recent previous works, author this novel contains the names of fans appearing as some of the characters. The luckiest of the fans will also have their character die a horrific and untimely and death. The FDO implored Junkies from far and wide were to use their illustration skills (or tap their friends who had skills) to create the Tier One Team Logos for The Starter. The contest was announced on scottsigler.com with the request being to create logos for 18 of the 22 Tier One teams. Each winning entry would be rewarded with a $50USD prize. After intense deliberations between the FDO and A Kovacs, these winners were announced:
